Work starts on new bungalows in South Bank

Work started earlier this year, but due to Covid guidance, the official ceremony to celebrate this fantastic milestone has waited until now.

The 28 new bungalows, all for affordable rent, are being built around the Redcar Road area of South Bank. They’re being delivered by Thirteen in partnership with Esh Construction and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council supported by funding from Homes England and just over £500k from the Government's Brownfield Housing fund, as part of a larger housing-led regeneration programme for the area.

The new bungalows will replace terraces demolished more than ten years ago and complement the nearby South Bank Eco Village.

Thirteen's head of new business & growth, Angela Brockbank, said:

"This long-awaited milestone is a great step towards bringing much needed new bungalows to South Bank.

"It's a really exciting scheme, and we're thrilled to be working with Esh Construction, as well as the Tees Valley Combined Authority, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Homes England and other partners to deliver these fantastic new homes, which will help boost the regeneration of the area and create vital job opportunities for local people.

"As well as that, these new homes will meet the needs of our ageing population and support people to live independently."

Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Mary Lanigan, said:

“These bungalows will, I’m sure, soon become much loved homes for people who need and very much deserve them, including some of our pensioners. It’s also part of the wider regeneration of the area and is a fantastic project and I would like to congratulate everyone involved.”

Esh Construction’s divisional director, Gary Dobson, added:
